Reading: Matthew 3:1-12
In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said,
“The voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord,
make his paths straight.’”
Now John wore clothing of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were going out to him, and all the region along the Jordan, and they were baptised by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit worthy of repentance. Do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our ancestor’; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the axe is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
“I baptise you with water for repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
Meditation:
The prayers and hymns of Advent speak of the coming Christ as the Desire of the Nations, as though each nation had its particular hope and dream of fulfillment; its own relationship with God running through time. But nations as we have come to know are not simple entities. Some of the world’s worst atrocities have come about through people trying to create a pure identity through the toxic mix of nationhood, ethnicity and religion. At its best faith presses us to look beyond these particularities to what we all desire: liberty, material sufficiency and hope. Of those I think the most important, ultimately is hope. What faith sees as the Desire of Nations transcends the desires of any particular nation. Today all nations have to look beyond themselves and their own interests. We all look east and west and north and south. It is the oneness of the world, not the integrity of the nation, which is today our greatest moral and spiritual challenge.

Do we not only feel Dutch and European, but also citizens of the world?
Would it be possible to abolish all borders? Can we dream of that?

Lezing: Mattheüs 3:1-12
In die tijd kwam Johannes de Doper naar de woestijn van Judea. Daar zei hij tegen de mensen: ‘Dit is het moment om je leven te veranderen. Want Gods nieuwe wereld is dichtbij.’ Over Johannes heeft de profeet Jesaja gezegd: «Hij roept in de woestijn: Opzij voor de Heer! Maak de weg klaar voor de Heer!»
Johannes liep in een jas van kameelhaar, en hij had een leren riem om. Hij leefde van sprinkhanen en honing.
Alle mensen uit Jeruzalem, uit Judea en uit het gebied van de Jordaan kwamen naar hem toe. Ze zeiden: ‘We hebben spijt van alles wat we verkeerd gedaan hebben.’ En Johannes doopte hen in de rivier de Jordaan.
Er kwamen ook veel Farizeeën en Sadduceeën naar Johannes om gedoopt te worden. Toen Johannes hen zag, zei hij: ‘Stelletje slangen! Jullie denken dat je slim genoeg bent om te ontsnappen aan Gods straf. Jullie zeggen: ‘We horen toch bij het volk van Abraham?’ Maar luister naar mijn woorden: God kan van de stenen die hier liggen een nieuw volk van Abraham maken. Laat eerst maar eens zien dat jullie je leven echt willen veranderen! Jullie moeten goede dingen doen. Dan zullen jullie lijken op een boom met goede vruchten. Want God zal alle bomen zonder goede vruchten omhakken en in het vuur gooien. De bijl ligt al klaar.’
Johannes zei tegen de mensen: ‘Ik doop jullie met water. Dat laat zien dat jullie je leven willen veranderen. Maar na mij komt iemand die veel machtiger is dan ik. Ik ben niet eens goed genoeg om zijn schoenen uit te trekken. Hij zal jullie dopen met het vuur van de heilige Geest.
Hij lijkt op een boer die het koren van zijn akker haalt. De boer bewaart het graan in zijn schuur. Maar het stro dat overblijft, steekt hij in brand. Net zo zal de man die na mij komt, het goede bewaren. Maar het slechte zal hij verbranden, met vuur dat nooit uitgaat.’
Meditatie:
De gebeden en hymnen van Advent spreken van de komende Christus als een wens van verschillende volkeren; alsof elke natie zijn eigen hoop en droom van vervulling had; zijn eigen relatie met God die door de tijd heen loopt.
Maar naties, zoals we die hebben leren kennen, zijn geen eenvoudige entiteiten.
Sommige van ‘s werelds ergste wreedheden zijn tot stand gekomen doordat mensen probeerden een pure identiteit te creëren door middel van een giftige mix van nationaliteit, etniciteit en religie.
Op zijn best dwingt het geloof ons te kijken naar wat we allemaal verlangen: vrijheid, materiële toereikendheid en hoop. Hiervan is volgens mij de belangrijkste, uiteindelijk, de hoop.
Het geloof kun je zien als de wens die de verlangens van een bepaalde natie overstijgt.
Tegenwoordig moeten alle naties verder kijken dan zichzelf en hun eigen belangen. We kijken allemaal naar het oosten en het westen en het noorden en het zuiden.
Het is de eenheid van de wereld, en niet de integriteit van de natie, die vandaag onze grootste morele en spirituele uitdaging is.
Vragen:
Voelen wij ons naast Nederlander en Europeaan ook wereldburger?
Zou het mogelijk zijn, om alle grenzen op te heffen? Kunnen we daarvan dromen?
