The Lent Podcast series
Week 2, Wednesday in the First Week of Lent
Bless us, O God, in this holy season, in which our hearts seek your help and heal-
ing; and so purify us by your discipline that we may grow in grace and in the
knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and
the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
The Gospel
Luke 11 starting the 29th verse–32
When the crowds were increasing, Jesus began to say, “This generation is an evil generation; it asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so the Son of Man will be to this generation. The queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, and see, something greater than Solomon is here! The people of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the proclamation of Jonah, and see, something greater than Jonah is here!”
Reflection:
Today’s reading for me is all about the mystery of faith. The reading is about growing closer to God, getting to know Him and being led along the path of mystery. This capacity for mystery, a capacity we all have, can be cultivated. Do we reduce the wonders of nature, of the world around us to be merely factual, or do we let ourselves be drawn into wondering who the Author might be? Therefore the ‘signs’ Jesus is talking about in today’s reading are everywhere around us.
Rather than praying for a sign, we are surrounded by signs and it is up to us to learn how to see them, through silance, prayer and meditation. Look at yourself. Look at each other. Aren’t we all surrounded by signs and symbols, without seeing them?… Prayer can awaken the mystical dimension within us which may be dormant. And Lent might me the suitable moment to focus on all the beautiful mysteries and signs of God around us.
Prayer:
May God bless you and keep you
May God make Gods face shine upon you
May God be gracious to you
And give you peace.
Amen
